JOB DESCRIPTION


An employee in this position is responsible for the connecting, disconnecting, and reading of electric, natural gas and water meters in the service area of the City. Standard procedures are set by City ordinance, department policy and Federal/State regulations. Work is performed under the supervision of the AMI Supervisor. Judgement is exercised to ensure the safety of self and others, to verify the correctness of meter information and readings, and to detect and investigate incidents of high and/or low usage.


Examples of Work

  • Receives work orders and reading routes, verifies addresses and meter numbers, and enters the necessary information into a handheld computer or tablet.
  • Ensures the proper follow-up on metering problems related to assigned work orders and routes.
  • Reports and/or creates work orders for water and natural gas leaks.
  • Installs meters and programs radio communication modules to remotely gather readings.
  • Maintains vehicle if assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Possess a valid drivers’ license and good driving record

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Ability to walk up to five miles per day.
  • Skill in personal and customer relations.
  • Ability to read and troubleshoot utility meters.
  • Skill in computer data entry.
  • Ability to recognize and solve problems.

Physical Demands

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment such as: walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach twist, grasp, remove dirt from water meter boxes, and make repetitive hand movement. The performance of daily duties requires operating assigned equipment and vehicles, lifting/carrying/pushing moderate to heavy amounts of weight, and verbally communicating to exchange information.


Work Environment

The employee will be exposed to the following conditions in the work environment: hot or cold indoor work environment; dirt, dust, grease; outdoor environmental conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The work is often performed on rough ground and often slippery surfaces. Protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, hearing protectors, helmets, and other protective equipment or clothing may be required. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
