Job Summary

Employee performs skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of the most complex equipment. Duties include welding, fabrication, and the repair of all other city equipment. Employee is also responsible for assisting in the training of mechanics with less experience. Supervision of others may be required.

Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Superintendent using independent judgment as to method of repair in accordance with the work order. Work is reviewed by the garage Foreman, primarily by observations and evaluation of results obtained.

Necessary Requirements

  • • Demonstrated knowledge of hydraulic assembly, electrical components, etc.
  • • Knowledge of the day to day operation of the Garage or assigned location.
  • • Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, test equipment, methods and practices used in maintenance and repair of all city equipment.
  • • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • • Skills in the proper operation of the tools and equipment used to perform the job.
  • • Skills in welding and fabrication.
  • • Ability to read and comprehend service manuals.
  • • Ability to operate the variety of equipment owned by the city.
  • • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • • Ability to give oral and written instructions.
  • • Ability to instruct and train apprentices and mechanics.
  • • Ability to lift heavy objects - up to 75 lbs. routinely.
  • Knowledge of functionality of circuitry, equipment, motors, etc.
  • Ability to perform physical essential functions of job

Necessary Special Requirements

  • High School Diploma or its GED equivalent
  • Completion of automotive trade school. (Desired)
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years experience in automotive maintenance related field.
  • Possess a State of Georgia Class B driver's license with air brake and Hazmat endorsement.
