Employee in this position is responsible for ensming that day-to-day water plant production is of adequate quantity and quality to meet the needs of the City's water customers. Duties include overall management of plant operations, maintenance of equipment and utility dispatching after normal work hours and on holidays. Employee monitors compliance with Federal, State and City regulations governing water treatment, pumping and storage. Employee supervises water plant personnel and reports to the Water/Sewer Operations Manager.

Examples of Work

  • Monitors plant performance and recommends operating changes as necessary.
  • Establishes operating parameters for water tanks and pumping stations.
  • Creates employee work schedules.
  • Provides for management and training of plant operators, lab analysts and mechanics.
  • Evaluates employee performance.
  • Purchases required chemicals and ensures their safe use and handling.
  • Resolves customer complaints regarding water quality.
  • Ensures proper handling of dispatch calls and follow-up as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of current water treatment standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Amendments.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of water plant mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to make quick, sound and safe decisions.
  • Effective leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work any shift and be on-call as necessary.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to promote positivity and a team environment

Necessary Training & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • State of Georgia Class I operator certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • State of Georgia laboratory analyst certification.
  • Possess a valid Georgia driver' s license.
  • Five years experience in the operation of a surface water treatment plant.
  • Extensive knowledge of the City of LaGrange Water Plant operations and troubleshooting.
  • Three years of supervisory or managerial experience.
