Job Summary

An employee in this position is responsible for supervising 8-12 patrol officers and civilian employees, participating in police related activities on an assigned shift, unit or section. Duties include assuming complete charge of a situation in the absence of a superior officer and general administrative work at police headquarters. Work is performed in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures and in conformance with local, state and federal laws, but employees must use initiative and judgement in their application. Employee is given specific and general instructions on new assignments, but works with considerable independence in performing regularly assigned duties. Work is reviewed through discussion, staff meetings, inspection, observation of the correctness of decisions, and through oral and written reports.

  • Supervises daily assignment of patrol duties.
  • Conducts inspection of officers and equipment.
  • Coordinates assignments of officers and vehicles to ensure adequate coverage of assigned zones.
  • Assigns officers to special details.
  • Confirms attendance and posts pertinent information on a daily basis. Updates time sheets.
  • Advises officers of orders and/or changes in policy or special procedures.
  • Supervises investigations of a domestic or criminal nature.
  • Assists on back-up for other patrol units.
  • Responds to emergency calls in a timely manner.
  • Enforces state and local laws.
  • Coordinates activities of a criminal and non criminal nature.
  • Assists all citizens in a time of a crisis.
  • Gives directions and/or information to citizens as requested.
  • Administers daily activities of police department.
  • Verifies and confirms payroll time sheets.
  • Verifies and confirms all reports submitted by other officers.
  • Coordinates investigation with other departments or divisions.
  • Disciplines officers as needed, takes corrective action, and documents action taken.
  • Maintains accurate records concerning vehicles and equipment maintenance.
  • Communicates with public having business within station and directs them to appropriate offices.
  • Coordinates court appearances.
  • Investigates minor citizen complaints.
  • Manages Overtime.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Primarily responsible for training of officers under their command.
  • Responsible for required administrative reporting.

Desirable Training & Experience

  • Five to ten years of experience as a police officer or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Supervisor Level I, level II, and Level III
  • Bachelor Degree

Hiring Requirements & Process

For consideration for the position of sergeant, an applicant must meet the following requirements and complete the following testing processes:

  1. Applicants must be a Georgia POST certified Peace Officer, in good standing, and with no sanctions. Applicants must have an Associate Degree or 60 semester hours or the equivalent from an accredited college.
  2. Applicant must have a minimum of five years as a police officer with eighteen months as rank of sergeant or higher rank at time of testing, possess a valid driver's license issued through the candidate’s home state, must be in good physical condition, and must successfully undergo an extensive character background to include a psychological, and aptitude testing.
  3. Applicants will be required to participate in the police officer hiring process and successfully complete the process prior to participating in the sergeant testing process.   4. Applicant must successfully complete the sergeant testing process which consist of a written examination, practical exercise and oral interview.
  5. The applicant will report to an oral board for predetermined job related questions relating to command presence, leadership, oral skills, stress management, and decision making. These questions will account for up to 25% of the overall score.
  6. The applicant will complete an essay related to the Sergeant position. This presentation will account for up to 10% of the overall score.
  7. A written multiple choice test relating to the job of police sergeant will be administered by Human Resources. The multiple-choice test will account for up to 35% of the overall score.
  8. A practical exercise will be included in the process and will account for 30% of the overall score.
  9. The expected duration of the entire process is two days for the police officer testing and two days for the sergeant testing process.
